Does Your Parking Facility Meet ADA Specifications ?

Virtually all parking facilities for commercial buildings are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which took effect in January 1992. It requires a minimum number of handicap accessible parking stalls depending on the size of the parking lot, and a minimum number of van-accessible parking spaces depending on the number of handicap accessible spaces. These are only a few of the many requirements parking lots must meet to comply with federal ADA regulations.

It Also Requires :

- Specific signage and specific sign placement
- Unobstructed access routes
- Access aisles leading from parking stalls to the sidewalk or other access route
- Use of curb ramps

Penalties for not complying could include:

- A court could order to bring the parking lot into compliance
- Civil penalties not to exceed $50,000 for the first violation and $100,000 for the second violation
- Monetary damages to the person or organization suing the property owner
